One Nation, One Election. Pros and Cons

What is One Nation, One Election?

One Nation, One Election is a proposal under consideration by the Government to arrange elections for the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies. It intends to hold these elections simultaneously, either on a single day or within a specific time frame.

Is this a new scheme?

After we got our independence, till 1967 there was only one election that was conducted throughout the nation to determine Lok Sabha and state assemblies. But due to some political disturbances and in some states some government didn't even complete its tenure so this cycle could not continue.

Mostly 3 types of election are conducted nowadays.

  1. Lok Sabha Elections. (Member of Parliament)
  2. State Elections. (Chief Minister)
  3. Municipal Elections. (Sarpanch)

Because these elections are held once in every 5 year and their dates do not overlap. So every state has been conducted elections according to its time. Overall, elections are going on somewhere in India every single day.

If this policy had been failed once, then why efforts are made to bring it back?

Benefits

1. To follow Code of Conduct. It means during the time of elections any political party can not do or promote or launch any development projects, well-fare schemes despite of how much important it is to the development of country. It is done because at the time of elections if the political party do these things the voters will get confuse and there is a high chance that the voters will give vote to that particular party. So if all elections are conducted at the same time the development can be stop for a particular time and our code of conduct can be implemented. And after the elections all the party can continue their projects or schemes until next elections.

2.  Less Expense in Elections. In 2019 elections India ranked 1st who spend most in elections and year by year this amount is getting increased. The amount that government or political parties are spending that amount is the tax that is being paid by common people and which shall be used in the development of the common people. The expense of only Election Commission is approximately 10,000 crore in year 2019. Election Commission of India has openly said that if One Nation One Elections get implemented the cost reduced to 4500 crore.

3. Better utilization of Armed forces and Government officials. These people whose duty is to serve common people gets busy in elections.

Problems

1. Their is not a solution provided in case the ruling Government in a state gets dissolved.

2. If state and central election are being conducted simultaneously then there is a high probability that people will elect same political party in state as well as central. But if a gap of around 6 months is given then the probability gets low due to as time goes on the mindset of people can change and maybe the party whom they have given vote may not been performing up to their expectations.

3. This scheme may benefit most to the central party because they indent to solve a larger problem compare to a local or regional party. That is against our constitution.
Well this policy is implemented in some major countries like Germany, Sweden, France, Belgium, South Africa, Philippines etc.

Let me know your views about this policy.
