Amul-PETA Controversy

 Importance

  • Amul, is an Indian diary cooperative society, based at Anand in the State of Gujarat.
  • Today is jointly owned by 3.6 million milk producers in Gujarat, and the apex body of 13 District Milk Unions, spread across 13,000 villages of Gujarat.
  • Amul spurred White Revolution, which made the country the world's largest producer of milk and milk products.

The Issue.

India's largest diary brand Amul has countered animal rights organization PETA's suggestion to "switch to plant-based diary", questioning how employment to crores of people could be provided if that were to be the case.
Also PETA is promoting Vegan lifestyle all over the World. So let us discuss vegan and vegetarian lifestyle.

What is Vegetarian?

According to the Vegetarian Society, a vegetarian is someone who does not eat any meat, poultry, fish, shellfish or by-products of animal slaughter.

Vegetarian diets contain various levels of fruits, vegetables, grains, pulses, nuts and seeds. The inclusion of dairy and eggs depends on the type of diet you follow.

What is Vegan?

A vegan diet can be viewed as the strictest form of vegetarianism.

Veganism is currently defined by the Vegan Society as a way of living that attempts to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty as much as possible.

This includes exploitation for food and any other purpose.

Therefore, a vegan diet not only excludes animal flesh, but also dairy, eggs and animal-derived ingredients. These include gelatin, honey, carmine, pepsin, shellac, albumin, whey, casein and some forms of vitamin D3.

Vegetarians and vegans often avoid eating animal products for similar reasons. The largest difference is the degree to which they consider animal products acceptable.

Amul Vice-Chairman (Valamji Humbal)

"To ensure that such organiations stop their activities in India, milk producers of Gujarat urge PM Modi to initiate necessary action to impose a ban on organisations which are engaged in condemnable activity of tarnishing the image of diary industry through misinformation campaign and then harm them by encountering plants of multination companies producing synthetic milk."
